A Death in the Family    When I was in high school, my Daddy died while visiting our troops in Korea. I cried endlessly over my loss. Daddy was making a run for the Senate and thought a trip overseas would make him more accessible to the common man. As Governor Thorensen stated so emotionally, “It’s not only a great loss for family and friends; but, a great loss for state and nation.” I laugh that I actually embroidered that statement on a throw pillow a few days later. It’s probably lying around the house somewhere. Miss Carlisle, Momma’s secretary, moved into Momma’s room. And, at supper that evening, Momma and Miss Carlisle changed the course of all our lives.

Emma Hayden Elliot watched her daughter descending the stairs and gave a delicate sniff. Really, the girl took after her husband’s family. Honey Elliot was the ultimate All American Girl, with every attribute exaggerated. Honey was tall and gorgeous, with huge, firm, pendulous breasts, narrow hips, concave tummy, and perfect legs. Like all the women born into the Elliot family, Honey was a walking defiance of gravity. Emma didn’t despise Honey her looks. She despised Honey’s goodness. The only rebellious thing Honey did was allow her dark blonde hair to grow to her waist; and, even in that, Honey conformed, by twining her hair into different, sometimes quite complex, upsweeps in order not to stand apart from the crowd. Honey was dressed for dinner, in a long, straight black skirt, and a silver blouse with swooping sleeves and narrow wrists. Emma walked to the stairs, gratified to see the girl’s smile falter. Emma held a finger to her lips as Honey opened her mouth to question her. Emma looked up into her daughter’s eyes. “Spread your legs apart, dear,” Emma ordered in a very quiet voice.

Honey’s eyes grew wide as she looked down at her mother. Honey was still on the second step of the stairs, and she could feel her mother’s hot breath against her pelvis. Honey flushed and gasped, “Momma…”
